Euroshares close flat to higher; tech outperforms on SAP, IBM reports ...

(Updating with full report) LONDON, Jan. 14, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) -- Europe's leading exchanges closed out the session flat to higher amid ongoing credit concerns and fears of a US recession, but the technology sector outperformed after strong quarterly sales from SAP and a solid earnings report from US computer giant IBM. (NYSE:IBM) The Dow Jones STOXX (OOTC:DJSFF) 50 Index dipped 0.17 point to 3,539.03 while the DJ STOXX 600 Index ticked up 1.09 points, or 0.3 pct, to 344.78. At the close of European trading, US stocks were trading higher after IBM said preliminary fourth-quarter earnings rose 24 pct year-on-year to beat Wall Street expectations by a wide margin, with the weaker dollar helping to push revenue up 10 pct. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, of which IBM is a component, was up more than 100 points.

If budget is broken, work now to repair it

So you've blown your budget buying Christmas gifts for family, friends and even the neighbor's dog.

That's little surprise. It's the American way to spend and spend. In an October survey by BIGresearch and the National Retail Federation, consumers said they planned to shell out an average of $923.36 during the holidays, a modest 4 percent increase over last year but up a steep
24 percent since 2003.

Depression-era stories offer lessons from the past

The Great Depression of the 1930s may well qualify as the toughest time in U.S. history. The stock market crashed on Oct. 24, 1929. Banks collapsed. Factories closed. Homeowners and farmers faced foreclosure.

By 1933, a quarter of workers were unemployed.
Unemployment and foreclosures are eerily familiar themes in Michigan today.

But todays struggle is a blip compared to the tough times in the 1930s, said David Wheelock, economist with the Federal Reserve Bank in St. Louis.

Nothing weve had since the Great Depression is anywhere close to being as bad, he said.

'Special Report' Panel Previews New Hampshire Primaries

JOHN MCCAIN, PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: We know how important New Hampshire is to our campaign. There's no sugarcoating that. It's straight talk that is absolutely important.

MITT ROMNEY, PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: No guarantees, but I'm planning on winning, and I can be pretty sure that by the end of the day, I will have received more votes for president than any of the Republicans.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BRIT HUME, HOST: Of course Mitt Romney is talking there, not about just this race, he's talking about all these races so far, and maybe that will be true. The problem for him, of course, is to come in first somewhere, sooner or later.

If you think about it, what the two guys seem to be acting like were a couple of guys who were in a very, very close race, and all the best indications we have tonight are that indeed they are.

'20% row with family over debts'

Nearly one in five people have fallen out with loved ones over family debts, a survey has shown.

The findings come as lending between families has soared by more than 80% to £25.1 billion in the last 10 years, according to the Skipton Building Society.

The rising borrowing has put a strain on relationships, with 17% rowing with family members as a result, the survey found.

The building society's YouGov poll also revealed that 10% thought their family took their generosity for granted, while 9% were reluctant to lend the cash in the first place.

Meanwhile, 6% of respondents said they believed their money had been used unwisely, with 7% adding that family members had made no attempt to repay them at all.

Oil prices rise on cold weather reports

NEW YORK — Oil prices climbed Monday as forecasts for blustery weather nationwide raised expectations that demand for energy will surge in the coming days.

Rising political tensions in the Middle East contributed to the advance, apparently outweighing worries that a weakending U.S. economy could curb oil demand.

After opening lower, light, sweet crude for February delivery rose $1.14 to $93.83 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent crude gained $1.66 to $92.73 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

"The main thrust to the upside is pretty clearly weather driven," said Citigroup Global Markets energy analyst Tim Evans. "That has the natural gas market extending last week's gains and making heating oil the leader on the upside of the petroleum complex."

Heating oil futures added more than 5 cents to $2.5866 a gallon, while natural gas futures gained 12.5 cents to $8.335 per 1,000 cubic feet.
